Given the inexorable rise of oil burners over the past decade it is a surprise to discover that in terms of fast, affordable diesel hatchbacks, the new Seat Ibiza FR TDI really is the only show in town at the moment. Bring any of the cars current competitors to mind (Fiesta, Corsa, Mito, Punto, 207, Fabia, Polo etc) and all lag some way behind the Ibiza's power. The FR's superiority is thanks to the new 2.0-litre TDI engine Seat has wedged under the bonnet. The turbo diesel produces 140bhp, but the headline figure is the torque; 236lb ft between 1750 and 2500rpm. These figures mean the Ibiza is not only quicker than the previous model, but also comfortably faster than anything else in its segment. And thanks to common rail technology, the new engine is also more economical and has lower emissions. Seat claims the FR is capable of 64mpg, while CO2 emissions of just 119g/km means the Ibiza costs just 35 a year in tax. Even the insurance is cheap. Continue reading First Drive: Seat Ibiz
STATESVILLE, NC - A phone call from a suspicious neighbor helped lead police to a man who they said broke into a car to steal the owner's manual. Carl Russell Daye of Statesville was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle. Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson said a citizen living on Davie Avenue noticed a man looking into the vehicles in the area and called police. Statesville police officers responded and found a man fitting the description on Stockton Street, Anderson said. Police spoke with him and, eventually patted him down, finding an owner's manual for a BMW. Officers found the registration as well, and went to the 500 block of Davie Avenue, Anderson said. There they found the owner's manual had been taken from an unlocked BMW, Anderson said.

A t 26-years-old, Michael Nolan is sleek and sophisticated, even if he's been around the block a few times. Nolan happens to be outgoing University of Lethbridge president Bill Cade's beloved 1984 BMW 325e. But not for much longer. As he prepares to hand over his position as head of the university to Michael Mahon this summer, Cade is leaving behind the vintage black sports car with the Students' Union to be raffled off for scholarships. "My wife and I, and many others, have this belief in public education. This is a small thing that we're doing for public education. But I hope it inspires others as well," said Cade. As Alberta's postsecondary students face steeper tuition rates, a tough job market and dwindling scholarship prospects, Cade's donation is particularly meaningful, said University of Lethbridge Students' Union president Jeremy Girard. "In a provincial climate where the province isn't willing to take responsibility for ensuring students have enough money t
